Making a Difference Together
The donation from German Cycle of Life e. V., to the Zululand Conservation Trust will go a long way with their boma project for the rhino orphans:
- Construct a sturdy pole boma structure to create a secure environment for orphaned rhino calves.
- Acts as a measure to monitor and safeguard the calves from security threats.
- Provide ongoing care and support for older rhino calves that arrive at the ZCT facility.

The rhino poaching crisis results in hundreds of rhinos being killed for their horns every single year. Some of these rhinos are mothers, leaving behind orphaned and traumatised little rhino calves who are unable to survive in the wild on their own. For this reason, the Zululand Rhino Orphanage has been established to rescue and take care of these orphans until they are ready to be released back into the wild. ZRO is the only specialised rhino orphan facility in KwaZulu-Natal and with poaching on the rise in KZN, more and more rhino calves are being orphaned.
In recent weeks, we have witnessed a surge in the number of rhino orphan arrivals due to the alarming increase in rhino poaching incidents in the Zululand Region. The Zululand Rhino Orphanage (ZRO) has welcomed five new arrivals in the past week, with a sixth expected as I draft this proposal. Urgently, the ZRO requires an expansion of the boma section to accommodate additional space for older calves. The proposed pole boma will function as a secure enclosure, ensuring that animals cannot escape and minimizing visibility from outside. Additionally, this expansion will enable us to separate the calves into age groups, improving the rehabilitation process.
Our project aims to:
• Construct a sturdy pole boma structure to create a secure environment for orphaned rhino calves.
• Acts as a measure to monitor and safeguard the calves from security threats.
• Provide ongoing care and support for older rhino calves that arrive at our facility.
Your support is critical in helping us achieve our goal of safeguarding and rehabilitating these magnificent creatures. Together, we can provide a lifeline for orphaned rhino calves and give them the chance to thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.
Thank you forconsidering our funding proposal.
We look forward to collaborating with you in our shared mission to protect and preserve our rhinos.
Sincerely,
