Rhino poaching is still an enormous issue in South Africa, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where syndicates operate with impunity, posing a significant threat to these creatures. In response to this escalating crisis, Cycle of Life Charity Funds has made an investment in the funding of four surveillance cameras along the N2 corridor, in collaboration with Nyathi Anti Poaching Unit. This area serves as a thoroughfare not only between different national parks in KZN but also from the Kruger National Park, facilitating the illegal trafficking of rhino horns into Mozambique.

The statistics are disappointing: KwaZulu-Natal has emerged as the most targeted province in the country for rhino poaching. In 2022, a staggering 244 rhinos fell victim to poachers in KZN alone. Tragically, this figure rose to 325 in 2023. Even in January 2024, despite concerted efforts, 16 rhinos were ruthlessly slaughtered for their horns in KZN. These numbers clearly show the urgent need for proactive measures to combat poaching activities.

We believe that these cameras will significantly assist in curtailing the poaching syndicates and thereby safeguard the future of rhinos in KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa. By enhancing the monitoring capabilities, we aim to disrupt illicit activities, deter would-be poachers, and ultimately, preserve the precious biodiversity of our natural heritage.
